José Bernardo de la Meana, The Fall of Simon Magus

Circa 1753-62
St. Peter's Altar, Cathedral of St. Savior, Oviedo, Spain

In the Golden Legend the demons who were keeping Simon Magus aloft simply allow him to fall when Peter commands them to do so, but in this image they are much more active, pushing Simon down with hands, feet, and pitchforks. Also, on the right one of them is endeavoring to snatch Nero's scepter from him.

On the lower left, St. Paul looks on while St. Peter gives his command. The other persons represent the crowd that the Legend says came out to see Simon fly back to Heaven as he had promised.
